Lennard Island lighthouse moonrise

I had always looked at the Lennard Island lighthouse with interest when enjoying my daily walks, wondering about its history and if it had any stories to tell. That interest transformed into fascination when my friend Steve loaned me the book “Light Years: Memoir of a Modern Lighthouse Keeper” written by Caroline Woodward. In it she describes the daily life of her lighthouse keeper husband and herself after she persuaded him to apply for the position of relief lighthouse keeper on a remote North Pacific Island.

After reading Caroline’s description of the work involved in taking care of a lighthouse, I have grown to respect and admire the commitment and hard work lighthouse keepers put in. To read more visit Caroline Woodward’s blog.

Lennard Island lighthouse was placed into operation in 1904 and its first keeper, Francis C. Garrard, earned the annual sum of $600.00. More fascinating stories of the families who have kept Lennard Island lighthouse going over the years, along with a video narrated by one of the children are on the lighthouse friends website.

When you visit Tofino and you are out and about, see if you enjoy, as I do, all the different views of Lennard Island Lighthouse from areas such as Rosey Bay, Cox Bay and Mallard Lake.

The beautiful photo on this page of moonrise over Lennard Island was taken by local Tofino photographer Jasmine Turner.
